UPDATEIn January, 2006, I opened the 304 Gallery & Art Studio with Wendy Miller, Randy Titchenal and Warren Travis. We are located in the 1890 Bryant Street Studios. Our address is 1890 Bryant St., 3rd floor, suite 304. Please contact me to schedule a visit. STATEMENT I was born in 1959 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. I grew up in New England, but currently reside in San Francisco with my partner Charles Smith. My exposure to art began almost from birth. My mother is an iconographer and painter; my father was a photographer and weaver. From an early age museums and art openings were an integral part of my life. Since my childhood, I have continued to immerse myself in the arts. I have been active in art communities on both coasts. For 14 years I have avidly collected works of emerging California artists. I consider myself a self-taught artist. Over the past few years I have been focused on the development of my own creative process--using my experience to hone my artistic skills. I view my art as representational-abstract. I draw on global politics, Asian aesthetics and organic shapes for inspiration for my imagery. I am fascinated with the use of bold colors and the development of multiple layers on two-dimensional surfaces. I apply gesso to paper and wood, then manipulate it to create uneven surfaces--much like those of old walls that are being torn down or restored. I use different media to give every piece distinct qualities of depth and texture. The use of reflective surfaces and metal shows influences from my parents. I invite my audience to examine each layer of my art then step back and look at it as a whole. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! George, for your time and the fantastic photos Kathryn, for your keen eye and inimitable art direction Charles, for the techie sense to get psorensenarts on the web... |
